Stree: A perfect horror comedy

Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurrana and Abhishek Banerjee starrer Stree release last Friday. Directed by Amar Kaushik and produced by Dinesh Vijan, the film opened mostly to positive reviews. The story is set in the Chanderi town where it is believed that during the four days of Mahapuja, Stree a witch enters the village and abducts men during the night, leaving only their clothes behind. The men in the town terrified because of her and feel unsafe to step outside their house during the night. Stree is a perfect mix of horror and comedy with a feminist touch to it. The film also gives a social message holding a truth to the current scenario. In just three days, this horror-comedy managed to collect Rs 31.26 crore at the domestic box office. With the positive reviews and word of mouth, the film is expected to win it big at the box office. Pinkvilla interacted with the producer of Stree, Dinesh Vijan who shared with us how he feels about all the positive reactions the film has received. The filmmaker also told us about the risks, the reason why they ended the film on a confusing note and about Stree’s sequel.

Stree-a perfect horror-comedy

Let`s have look what Stree has to offer it`s Star cast:-

Rajkummar Rao:

Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor-starrer “Stree” is on its way to becoming a sleeper hit as it rides on good word of mouth and largely positive reviews. Stree box office collection for the first weekend is Rs 31.26 crore and it will get a further fillip with Monday being a holiday on account of Krishna Janmashtami in many parts of India.

On Sunday, he had revealed the film’s opening numbers, “Stree catches speed and hits double digits on Day 2… The low costs and high theatrical returns make it a BIG. While Shraddha’s biggest opener ever was 2014’s Ek Villain with Rs 16 crore earning, this is Rajkummar’s highest day one collection.

With Monday being a holiday, Stree will again expand its BO collection. Tuesday will come as a true test for the film, which is a horror comedy.

Till now, Stree has done better than films such as Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety and Fukrey Returns that have done good box office business this year. With Rs 26.57 crore in its kitty within three days, the Kartik Aaryan film went on to become a super hit.

Stree managed to cement its place despite a clash with Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir Se at the box office. The film starring Dharmendra, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol earned Rs.1.50-1.75 crore net on the day of its release. As Adarsh wrote, “When numbers do the talking… #Stree surpasses the expectations and estimations and posts a superb number on Day 1… Biz is expected to multiply over the weekend… Fri ₹ 6.82 cr. India biz… Hugely positive word of mouth has translated into Box office  numbers.”

Shraddha Kapoor

Indian audiences have forever been enticed by whirlwind romances on screen, and it is a romantic musical drama that gave actress Shraddha Kapoor her first Bollywood blockbuster. After the success of Aashiqui 2, there was no looking back for Kapoor who solidified her position in the film industry with profitable films.

Movies such as Ek Villain, Haider, ABCD 2 and Baaghi did well at the box office and gave enough reasons for the actor to celebrate. From 2013 to 2016, Kapoor had one blockbuster and two super hit films to her credit and ABCD 2 was the icing on the cake.

Out of 10 films in a span of five years, Shraddha had two high grossing films– ABCD 2 and Ek Villain. However, things went downhill for her after Baaghi and her second film in 2016, Rock On 2, faltered at the box office with collections as low as Rs 10.41 crore. The following three films also could not revive her magic at the box office.

In 2017, three of her films– OK Janu, Half Girlfriend, and Haseena Parkar performed below average leaving the actress wanting for a successful venture. 2018 seems to have brought a breath of fresh air for Kapoor. Her latest offering, Stree is recording strong numbers working across the board—multiplexes, single screens, metros, mass circuits. The film has clocked double-digit collections at Rs 31.26 crore in just three days.

During her five-year stint in Bollywood, Shraddha has been part of four profitable and an equal number of loss-making ventures. But 2018 looks promising with another upcoming movie — Batti Gul Meter Chalu releasing on September 21. An interesting point to note is the variety on offer despite the two movies, Stree and Batti Gul releasing within a span of one month. While Stree is a horror-comedy, a successful sub-genre in Bollywood, her other project will bring to the fore electricity issues in India.

Aparshakti Khurana

He may have entered the industry as Ayushmann Khurrana’s younger brother, but in just two years Aparshakti Khurana has managed to make a unique place for himself in the industry. As the cynical yet affable Bittu in Stree, he’s won our hearts with his comic timing and perfect mannerisms of a small-town boy from Chanderi. While the movie, which opened to fairly good reviews, is laden with brilliant performances,  Aparshakti manages to steal your heart with his powerful performance, even when he is sharing screen space with actor extraordinaire, Rajkummar Rao. While his actor brother is now a household name and a leading hero, Aparshakti has managed to steal hearts in smaller, supporting roles. Which the actor has claimed in several interviews, to be a conscious decision. From Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya to Stree, Aparshakti has proved that he is here to stay.

In case you are crushing on him right now, here are more reasons why you totally should.

He first made us smile in Dangal as the affable cousin, Omkar who cracked us up with his innocence. And we wanted more of him! Thankfully we got to see more of him in web series and TV shows. And Khurana lodged a permanent place in our hearts. His most recent role, as the slightly cynical but totally lovable best friend in Stree, convinced us to never friendzone him! I mean, clearly, this guy is going places! But hey, it’s not all jokes when it comes to Khurana. He does brooding looks with just as much ease as he does innocent laughter. But we definitely have a soft corner for that smile. And even his style game is on point! And as if he wasn’t perfect enough, he blows us away with his declaration of love on a Lethal level of cuteness at display here

And while we play no favourite among the Khurana boys not usually, he sure has a favourite. He can even make goofy look sexy! That’s a plus in our books. And despite the fact that he dons a hundred different looks… he appears completely at ease in all of them.  Clearly, the Khurana brothers have got us loving them just a little more with every new thing they do! Can’t wait to watch Aparshakti in his upcoming ventures.
